The classic tale of Don Quixote is given an authentic retelling by Little Soldier Productions at the Tobacco Factory Theatre.

Adopted by the Royal Ballet and given many film adaptations, the infamous story of the eponymous Spaniard is one that most people are familiar with. The Tobacco Factory Theatre will be showing the Little Soldier Productions interpretation of the farcical journey of Don Quixote and his squire, a show that promises to have you in stitches from beginning to end.

Often cited as one of the most influential pieces of Spanish literature, and as a founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote was one of the earliest canonical novels. It regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published and has had major influence on the literary community, as evidenced by direct references in Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers and Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The tale follows an elderly gentleman who decides to single-handedly revive the chivalry of the knights of old, enlisting the help of farmhand Sancho Panza, whose down-to-earth attitude provides a slightly satirical edge to Quixote’s often inane ideas. The story mocks but also endears us to this hapless character, giving way at times to a sharper social commentary.

Inspired by the story, two Spaniards and an Englishman re-enact the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age, here in Bristol. Their mammoth task would be easier if any of the following were true: they’d read the book, had enough actors or heeded the warnings of Terry Gilliam.

The Tobacco Factory performance is “an imaginative, provocative and hilarious adventure of immense proportions, to be taken with a pinch of salt and a handlebar moustache.”

Starting at 6pm on 26th July, tickets for the show cost £10 (£8 concessions). For more information visit www.tobaccofactorytheatres.com
