Sameep and Sam from the 365Bristol team visited The Eating Room in Totterdown. The Eating Room prides itself on high quality, locally sourced food and drink. As well as their own menu, the restaurant also hosts pop-ups, BBQ’s and workshops.

The Eating Room

The Eating Room is clean and bright, with mid-century and retro touches including tin plates and Ercol-esque chairs. It feels very much at home in the Bristol food scene, and offers an appetising selection of options demonstration food inspiration form around the globe.

Here’s what Sam thought of The Eating Room; Leaping forth from the lunch menu, lettered out on a giant whiteboard dominating one of The Eating Room’s four walls, is the chilli con carne, which arrives, after no time at all, on a bed of brown rice and flanked by a trio of triangular ciabattas. These trilateral flatbreads are of a perfect texture, baked to a brilliant fluffiness and making for the ideal accompaniment with which to absorb into the rich embrace of chilli. Textured brilliantly, kidney beans perforate the meaty solution with exactly the right consistency, adding their own subtle notes of flavour to the stew.

These are complemented nicely by the garlic existing within the flatbreads, which make ideal utensils for picking up every last morsel. The classic association of the dish keeps well with the homely feel of The Eating Room, but its touches of quality which take it beyond that which is found on the majority of dining room tables.

Here’s Sameep’s take; Initially tempted by the Cheddar Cheese Toastie with Kimchi or Pale Ale Mustard, I ultimately opted for the Shakshuka - Baked Eggs, Feta, and garlic cooked in a spicy and delectable tomato sauce and served with a crispy yet moist garlic flatbread. The eggs were cooked perfectly, with a creamy texture and complemented the sharpness of the crumbled feta cheese generously sprinkled on top of the dish.

Having tried many Shakshukas in the past, I can honestly say this was up there with the finest. The meal was enhanced by the home-cooked feel of the dish and the rustic presentation.
