The Golden Lion is somewhat of a Bristol institution located on Gloucester Road bordering Bishopston and Horfield. In May 2016 it was taken over by Drew Bridges and he's breathed new life into the venue. On the Sunday we visited, there was an eclectic mix of customers; testament to the broad appeal of The Golden Lion.

The Golden Lion’s new menu comprises soul food served seven days a week, supplemented on Sundays by roasts. The roasts vary from week to week. On the day we visited, there was a choice of brisket, chicken thighs, pork and a veggie option. All of them are served with a yorkie, maple carrots, roasties and seasonal veg.

I went for the pork, and Simon went for the brisket. My pork was a generous slab of tasty belly (with obligatory crackling) served on top of a delicious and creamy parsnip puree. The carrots were deliciously sticky and tender; I could definitely have eaten a plateful! The roast potatoes were tasty in their own right, and perfect sponges for the gravy. We were also given a bowl of gorgeously green cavolo nero.

I’m frequently disappointed by pub lunch Yorkshire puddings (despite, or perhaps because, they’re my favourite part) but I am very happy to report that this one was great; the perfect partnership of chewy bottom and crispy sides.

Simon’s brisket was beautifully cooked; tender but still maintaining enough chew to be satisfying. I was intrigued to try brisket in a roast as I’ve only ever had it barbequed before. It works really well! I would love to try cooking it at home as normally beef is such a stressful meat to cook to the perfect level of rareness, but you have no such worries with slow cooked brisket. Simon’s roast was otherwise identical to mine.

There’s just one choice of pudding and for our visit it was blueberry pie. I’ve yet to have a blueberry dish I didn’t love, and this didn’t disappoint. It was a great dish for after a roast. The lattice top meant that it wasn’t too filling, and the blueberries were sweetly fragrant, but not too rich.

While we were there, we had a good look at the regular soul food options and they all sound fantastic! I can definitely see The Golden Lion being somewhere we’ll visit again and again.
