After wiping bean residue from my beard I ventured out back into the outside world to take on the day and walk off this substantial breakfast I had just ingested. My digestive system won't be thanking me anytime soon, but I was satisfied.

As a personal trainer I’m very active each day and so once a week I make sure I find a Greasy Spoon Cafe to get crazy calorie wise. Everyone has a vice and mine is bingeing on English Breakfasts once a week and putting them to the test. A lot claim to do 'Large Breakfasts' but for a lot of them once I have finished they leave me wanting more; if it's not pushing 1,200 calories then I'll turn my nose up at it...though this probably has more to do with me being greedy than portion size.

Anyway, I got an anonymous tip from an informant that there was a place in the backstreets of Broadmead) that did a ‘proper good breakfast’ for a growing lad like myself. I grabbed my gym bags and ventured forth into the great unknown. ‘Who knows’ I thought to myself, maybe I can become Bristol 365's resident Full English expert. (I’m not sure we’re currently recruiting - Editor)

The 'Hungry Breakfast' retails at £4.80 and you get a decent portion with that. I chucked them some more pennies and got extra hash browns but it was still only just over a fiver. I didn't pay too much attention to the decor of the cafe; when it comes to good old fashioned greasy spoon cafe's it's all about the grub...if there's a copy of Metro in the corner with baked bean stains all over it then that's a bonus, and you know you are in good hands.

I liked the fact the Hungry Breakfast came with a cup of tea or coffee and the tea itself was great, ‘these guys know the score I thought to myself’, seasoned veterans if you will. I'll be honest, the toast was great, not sure what butter they used but there was a party in my mouth, everyone was invited. When establishments like this one offer a cuppa in with the price and it's not an add on, that always makes a good impression to me, it's a showing of solidarity that posher, more polished places sometimes forget to offer. If you make me a good cuppa then I'll follow you into battle.

Everything else was great; the eggs, the sausages, the black pudding and hash browns, and the beans, it wasn't so much quality I was looking for when I came, it was quantity, but after taking the last bit of bacon onboard and realising the quality was right up there, I felt satiated. The guys at the Cafe themselves? Really salt of the earth people, they were cracking jokes with the regulars and there was a good bit of banter going down. The food arrived promptly and was enjoyed by me from start to finish. After wiping bean residue from my beard I ventured out back into the outside world to take on the day and walk off this substantial breakfast I had just ingested. My digestive system won't be thanking me anytime soon, but I was satisfied. Mission status: COMPLETE.

Go down and show them some love, and they will show you bacon. Tell them The Beast from The North East sent you.

4/5
