I am familiar with Killer Mike’s work – to say he’s politically charged is an understatement. Recently I saw footage on YouTube of him breaking down at a gig while talking about the recent Ferguson situation in the US. I’ve been familiar with, and a huge fan of Rap since my Dad brought a copy of ‘Home Invasion’ home by Ice T – so I was keen to see what Killer Mike and the lads brought to the plate 20 or so years later.

From start to finish the energy levels were consistently high. The message was a positive and clear one – question everything, challenge the government and the powers that be, and as Mike himself put it “Kill your Masters” – it’s stuff that sends a chill down your spine. When you look around at the Dismaland landscape around you it makes more sense and becomes even more relevant. At the point Killer Mike points out the David Cameron artwork on the wall behind us as he is introducing ‘Lie, Cheat, Steal’, it really is a profound moment. ’Oh My Darling (Don’t Cry)’ was a highlight for me. It’s not just lyrics either; the unorthodox and at times dark music and beats behind the lyrics are also effortlessly cool, and catchier than a dose of man-flu. It’s a legitimate illness. Really.

Throw in some stage dives, a moshpit, and Killer Mike jumping into the crowd and seeing the set out with the fans he obviously values and it makes for a fun 75 or so minutes. Shows like this highlight why Hip Hop is so important, and can be used as a tool for spreading a message and saying something. As we all know, sadly this is rarely the motive behind a lot of current mainstream music. The spirit of Punk Rock is alive and well, just not as you know it.
