Exhibiting an ethos hingeing on simplicity and sharing, Pizzarova deliver classic food with the quality of a Italian pizzeria.

Pizzarova

Sitting atop the Gloucester Road, Pizzarova is an open-plan space shared evenly between its chefs and its diners. Bifurcated by a long table which points from the door towards the kitchen in which the former are diligently spinning dough and throwing sauce, the room encourages the communal enjoyment of their produce - the remit of which is visible from a series of tiles racked up on the left-hand wall.

There are three options: ‘The Lady’, a basic margarita, ‘Ours’, a pizza with the officially-approved combination of toppings (which today is spinach, artichoke and parmesan) or ‘Yours’, a combination of your own choosing from a list of 16 accoutrements. The system is, like the rest of the restaurant, simple, without being minimal; understated, without trying too hard to be.

I opt for a pizza with ham, chorizo, red onion, feta and cherry tomatoes, and place my order with a friendly gentleman on the till immediately next to the counter, at which one of his colleagues immediately drops to work on the base. There is something wonderfully organic in the candour of this process; it feels traditional, sincere, honest.

The food arrives promptly and looks great: roughly 10 inches in diameter and housed within fabulously disproportionate, doughy crusts, with an even smattering of feta standing proud against the deep red of the rest of the pie. And it tastes just as good; texturally-excellent, the slice retains its structural integrity very nicely, while the rich toppings delicately complement each other. It is washed down with a Freedom lager, the only beer that they have on draft.

We leave satisfied. Ultimately, all I have had is a pizza and a beer - and if you wanted much more than this then you would be hard-pressed to find it here. But Pizzarova doesn’t pretend to offer much more than a pizza and a beer, and they don’t need to: they deliver both of these things very, very well. A straightforward strategy executed with an exacting ease, the restaurant is unabashedly unpretentious and makes for a refreshingly pleasant dining experience.
