When my girlfriend turned to me, lifted the menu and asked - “Can I not just have everything?” It was definitely a sign that I was in for some good food and an even happier misses.

Having a girlfriend who doesn’t live in Bristol always has its downsides, however, one up side is that when she does come over to pay a little visit we can always justify heading out for a bit of grub during the day. Having looked for the perfect little late-lunching spot, we stumbled across the Phoenix.

We wandered over to the back of Cabot Circus and were immediately impressed. A city centre location with a beer garden that I honestly don’t think many other places throughout Bristol can rival (I’ve seen plenty, believe me.) We sat down outside in this little gem of a beer garden. Basking in a fairly mild late August we both felt automatically comfortable with The Phoenix. A pint of ale and a glass of wine finished and it was time to head on in and grab some grub.

Greeted by some of the friendliest staff I’ve come across in Bristol, we sat down and had a look through the menu. Whilst sat pondering on what I wanted, I also have to give it the Phoenix, they played some great tunes while I waited. The menu is extensive with many different and great combinations I haven’t really seen in any other pubs. Including amazing pizzas and renowned burgers. When my girlfriend turned to me, lifted the menu and asked - “Can I not just have everything?” It was definitely a sign that I was in for some good food and an even happier misses.

We both thought we would grab something from the new Mexican street food section of the menu. I went for the BBQ pulled pork sarnie whilst my other half went for the Brazilian hotdog, both costing a mere £9 each. We also decided to grab some sweet potato fries too, just to treat ourselves.

The food arrived at the table and I had high hopes as the waiter had said before that their Mexican street food menu was stunning. If looks were anything to go by he wasn’t lying. Immaculately presented and aromas to match I couldn’t wait to tuck in.

The sarnie tasted fresh and amazing. Toasted to perfection and oozing with flavour it was exactly what I needed. The hotdog was homemade and looked out of this world. With fresh salsa and potato straws garnishing the dog, it really looked as stunning as promised. I wish I could say it tasted great but my girlfriend wouldn’t sacrifice a bite (must have been that good). She assured me it was wonderful. All washed down with a pint of Amstel and another glass of house white for the lady (the drinks are also just as cheap as the food, which is fantastic for a city centre location). I couldn’t honestly fault the food and drink.

All this amazing food at a staggering cheap price and service that I haven’t seen topped anywhere else in the city made me feel right at home at the Phoenix. I wish I could nit-pick about things but I can’t. Even the general atmosphere was just right to relax in.

Friendly staff, clean environment, great food and drinks, it ticks all my boxes. I couldn’t recommend heading over enough, and I have been doing to all my friends. Thoroughly impressed I’m in no doubt I will be back time after time.
