Grace Fox reviews Myristica Indian Restaurant located on Welsh Back in Bristol on Sunday 19th January 2014

***NOW RELOCATED TO LARGER PREMISES AT 51 PARK STREET, BRISTOL, BS1 5NT***

Tucked away on Welsh Back in the centre of Bristol, you could easily miss this Indian restaurant when walking past, it’s relatively small exterior somewhat blending in to the (what I assume to be) block of flats above. However being a well–accredited restaurant, winner of both a British Curry Award and an Asian Food Award, it would be a shame for you to miss it.

Offering an upmarket and aromatic dining experience, Myristica astounded us with its beautiful décor. The elegantly laid out tables, the chandelier hanging within the centre of the venue, the extensive bar encompassing a wide range of wine, champagne and of course, Indian beers both pleasing to the eye and the wanting stomach! The service is also noteworthy. Every waiter attentive and cheerful in demeanour when taking our order or checking up on our progress. It was also great to see each waiter was well acquainted with every dish on the menu, offering us an informed description of what was in each dish in addition to how spicy they would be.

To begin, we started with an appetiser of poppadums’ and a selection of four dips, including an assortment of spiced pickles and chutneys. Each flavour unique yet complimentary of the others. I particularly enjoyed the mild chutney and the green salad (mix of finely chopped onion, carrot etc) dips. The spiced mint dip was also sublime, although I found the curried dip a little too hot to handle personally!

For the mains, both of us were certainly tempted by the wide range of kebabs that were available, however we both ended up settling on a curry option. My companion opting for the mild Dhaba Murgh, a chicken dish served in a tomato based sauce with onion, hung yogurt and fresh coriander with a side of lemon rice. Myself, indulging in the Barbary Duck main, a roasted duck breast seasoned with garlic, tamarind spice and sesame seeds, served with Pulao rice and a small salad. Both of which were delicious. Although we did end up taking up the waiter’s offer of some extra yogurt on the side to calm down the spice sensation that quickly erupted in our mouths! As an additional side we also chose a Keema Naan, a naan bread filled with minced lamb to soak up some of the glorious excess sauce which again was of the highest quality.

Once our mains had been cleared away, we were then greeted with a selection of deserts. Alas by this point we were simply too full to embrace one of the more substantial options. Although I must admit, it was hard to turn down the option of Chocolate Samosas which particularly seized my attention. Nonetheless we couldn’t resist ordering a selection of ice cream to share. The mango, pistachio and saffron flavoured scoops, served with a slice of warm tandoori pineapple under the suggestion of our waiter which offered a delicious contrast in flavour (and temperature!).

In all, we had a fabulous start to our Sunday evening here. The service was wonderful and quick, the food was exquisite and the venue, beautiful to behold. Myristica is indeed a credit to its manager Amit, as are his staff. And, for those of you who are often pressed for time, Myristica also do takeout. An option we’ll most certainly be taking up in the future.
