Monday nights are notoriously tough for gigs in most places. Unless you are Van Halen you might struggle to pull a crowd away from I’m a Celebrity or whatever reality dirge is currently being enjoyed by the masses.

However, no one told the people that were here to see Ghostpoet. If anything, if you were going to a gig, he would be a great candidate: nothing too heavy, but contemplative, soulful music to ponder life to. If you look at his activity on Spotify and Youtube it’s obvious he can draw a crowd  (not far off 1 million views in one instance).

Soulful is a good word to describe what he brings to the table; it’s all about the lyrics. That said, the trippy synths and licks in the background really make it a full sound – his band are well drilled, apart from the odd bit of chit chat, and a brief bit of dialogue with Big Jeff, it was one song into the next. He played some ‘golden oldies’ like ‘Survive it’ and ‘X Marks The Spot’ along with newer stuff from the mercury prize nominated album ‘Shedding Skin’ plus new single ‘Sorry my love, it’s you not me’.

It was euphoric stuff really. Energy wise it never really scaled amazing heights, and the set was possibly 10 minutes too long (if I was to be really picky) but I would rather there was a consistent vibe than aiming for peaks and troughs. He played the classics and mixed stuff up really nicely. His vocal delivery comes across live and you can tell he’s genuinely a lover of music, delivering his lines with conviction. I looked around and you could tell there were a few more romantic fools like myself in the crowd lapping up some of his lyrics that cut a bit deeper and obviously addressed relationships between us humans. Good Gig.

4/5
