The atmosphere was electric, the set list was on point, and Tom and Co had the gig-goers in the palm of their hand from the very first song, leaving an impression that will be hard to forget.

Despite the blazing fire to student flats earlier in the day, no harm was caused to the iconic venue of Colston Hall and the Editors’ gig was given the green light by the local authorities on Monday 12 October 2015.

Since the critically acclaimed band formed in 2002, they have been pleasing crowds home and abroad and are no stranger to leaving the audience wanting more - this evening was no different. Tom Smith, Russell Leach, Ed Lay, Justin Lockey and Elliott Williams put on an energetic display full of hits old and new, with a sprinkling of artistic license referencing James Bay’s ‘Hold Back the tiver’ and perhaps mocking ‘Alt-J’ a little with a rendition of the viral video ‘How to Write an Alt-J Song’.

It’s quite fitting that the Editors included ‘All Sparks‘ amongst their set list. As just like the song’s lyrics, “All sparks will burn out in the end”, the show went ahead to the delight of the nervous fans. Even the day’s events couldn’t deter Matthew Horne of ‘Gavin and Stacey’ fame, who was also amongst the revelers.

The version of ‘All Sparks’ was a stripped back acoustic for which a tongue in cheek nod was given to the fire which had earlier in the day, threatened to cancel the gig. The former Mercury Prize nominated band played all the crowd pleasers from ‘Sugar', ‘The Racing Rats’, an acoustic version of ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’ and not even Tom Smith forgetting the words to ‘Munich’ in the shows finale (for which he promptly apologised) could put a negative spin on what was a superb gig.

The Staffordshire band, who cite ‘Joy Division’, ‘Elbow’ and ‘R.E.M’ amongst their influences, appealed to a crowd of all ages and did not disappoint. The band returned to the stage to rapturous applause after the charged crowd had chanted for an encore. They returned triumphant with ‘Ocean of Night’, ‘Papillon’ and the show-stopper of the evening ‘Marching Orders’.

The atmosphere was electric, the set list was on point, and Tom and Co had the gig-goers in the palm of their hand from the very first song, leaving an impression that will be hard to forget. If you ever have the opportunity to see ‘The Editors’ perform live, grab the chance as you will not disappointed.
