Performing their unique brand of folk-punk with plenty of heart, Ducking Punches neatly combine meaningful stories with damn fine tunes…

Folk-punk outfit Ducking Punches rolled into town as part of an extensive UK-wide tour, and treated Tuesday night gig-goers with a high energy fun-filled set at Bristol's Exchange that proved the substance behind their strong reputation as a live band.

Ducking Punches - Live Bristol Music Review

The four-piece from Norwich are prolific live performers, with almost 1,000 shows under their belt. Their storytelling songs weave between love and death, friendship and mental illness. Having played festivals all over the world from Reading and Leeds to The Fest in Florida and everything in between - as well as extensively touring with label mate and good friend Frank Turner - it’s no surprise that they have been able to hone their live sound both through experience and hard graft.

Playing songs from their latest album ‘Fizzy Brain’, among the highlights from the set were latest single ‘Fun Fun Fun’ and the final track of the night ‘Big Brown Pills From Lynn’. Founder and frontman Dan Allen sings from the heart on themes that pretty much everyone can relate to on one level or another. It’s what makes their music so endearing.

Allen often performs solo shows, but this tour had the full band treatment, although the group had a somewhat new look to them this time around, with two of the four-piece being new faces to the line-up. Musically, it didn’t show however - they were polished, confident and seemingly enjoying every minute of the gig, much like the crowd who had come out to see them.
