Ibiza mainstays Cream bring their emulsion of trance and house to Motion, with proceedings overseen by head honchos Paul Van Dyk and Alex M.O.R.P.H.

Cream has been one of the most recognisable brands within the dance scene since they began back in the early 90’s and have since become a mainstay for the highest quality DJs and club nights throughout the world.

They are responsible for Creamfields, the UKs biggest dance-dedicated music festival, Cream Club based in Liverpool (until recently) which had to make way like so many of the big British nightclubs to redevelopments, and of course their Ibiza night hosted at the immortal Amnesia super-club on the white isle.

Paul Van Dyk

So what did Cream have in offer for a rare trip to the West Country?

On this occasion none other than the godfather of dance music himself Paul Van Dyk (above). On this night he was accompanied by fellow DJ/Producers from his world renowned record label Vandit; Alex M.O.R.P.H. who has just released a Beatport chart topping album Not All Super Heroes Wear Capes and Ben Nicky another festival headliner throughout the world. Also playing was Anthony Probyn a British born Cream resident DJ.

On offer too in the Tunnel was a range of DJ’s including Iain Mckenzie vs Clarke Smith, The Shuffle Brothers, Symon R vs Lee H and Teri Simmonds vs Taz Mead who were playing a mash up of more progressive house numbers for those who wished to take a break from the uplifting trance in the main room. A night of this calibre was always bound to raise the roof at the skate park/club Motion, and once again it did not disappoint.

We arrived at Motion to beginning of Anthony Probyn’s first set of the evening. He started off the night with a substantial set playing plenty of trance and house classics wetting the appetite of the crowd for what was to come later.

One the stroke of 11pm Alex M.O.R.P.H. stepped up to the decks and kicked of his set with the title track of his new album Not All Super Heroes Wear Capes, the crowd immediately lifted further and the dancefloor lit up. The Motion soundsystem did this track justice and was accompanied by fantastic lights production. This track set the tone for the rest of his set with Alex pumping out heavy trance songs both old and new, with tracks from his latest LP such as ‘Eureka’ and ‘Meeon’. Alex also played his new Paul Van Dyk collaboration track ‘We Are’ and the crowd greeted this with euphoria.

Next up was the headline act Paul Van Dyk playing a two hour set. Paul continued straight off where Alex had left off and played a whirlwind set consisting of his world-renowned trance tracks, alongside a mix of new songs but, as always with his sets, he put his own unique spin on every song. It is this which has attracted such a loyal following.

Highlights included Chris Schweizer’s ‘The Secret’, ‘Time Of Our Lives’, ‘Parranda’ and of course no Paul Van Dyk set would be complete without a play of his most recognisable song, ‘For an Angel’. The two hours were over in a flash and as always he left the crowd baying for more.

Ben Nicky

Next up to the plate stepped Ben Nicky (above). He has achieved his reputation within the trance scene for his ability to bring new leases of life to already huge tracks, becoming known as a mashup master. Ben did not disappoint on this evening playing his remix of Alex M.O.R.P.H.’s ‘Sunset Boulevard’, his remix of Paul Van Dyk’s ‘Louder’ and ‘Above & Beyond’s ‘Good for me’.

Anthony Probyn returned to the decks for the closing set and again kept the tempo and classics pumping out until the close of play at 5am.

It was needless to say a grand spectacle and I am sure the trance following within the West Country will be looking forward for the next time that Paul and co decide to drop by again because they will no doubt be greeted with open arms by all. I am sure my thanks go alongside everyone else’s to the In:Motion staff and technicians who ensured that the night went off without a hitch.
