A new menu of warming winter choices prove a hit at Cosy Club.

Cosy Club

When I arranged to review Cosy Club I knew I’d be in for a treat; if not for the food but the general décor and ambiance. Cosy Club sits on Corn Street in Bristol’s Old City, and when it first appeared there in the winter of 2014, there was much excitement and intrigue. The interior is grand and daylight spills through the glass roof and into the open exterior, characteristic of the old banking history of Corn Street’s buildings.

We each chose to order quite British classics from the new menu; I ordered the Black Angus Sirloin Steak (£15.95), served with chips and a rocket and parmesan salad, and a choice of prepared-on-site sauces (I chose the Green Peppercorn). My friend chose the Fish and Chips (£11.95) which came with minted mushy peas and tartar sauce.

Cosy Club - Fish and chips

Both portions were sizable, and the chips were indeed thick-cut, as they are described. I hadn’t originally ordered a sauce to have with my steak, but found that the meal in general needed it to moisten the dish. The meat was perfectly juicy and succulent though, and was complemented well with the rocket, although I could have done with more of the salad. The wholesome, thick-cut chips were the perfect density and flavour.

My friend thoroughly enjoyed the crispiness of his batter, and agreed with me about the thick-cut chips. He described the mushy peas as bland when I asked him, and didn’t really eat much of them. I never order mushy peas when I eat out, but I didn’t think mushy peas were supposed to be massively flavoursome, but I did like the minty-ness of them in this case.

Cosy Club - Eton mess

Despite knowing we had a friend’s birthday dinner arranged that night too, the choice of desserts made it difficult for us to resist getting one each too. We were both immediately sold by the first on the list; the Eton Mess (£5.95), but decided to get two and share them both. I was then very keen on the Salted Caramel Cheesecake (£5.95), intrigued by the combination of two of my favourite things.

Cosy Club - Salted Caramel Cheesecake

Both desserts were delicious, but we both agreed that the Eton Mess could have benefited from more meringue, and slightly less coulis. Having been my second choice pudding originally, the Salted Caramel Cheesecake turned out to be my favourite of the two. The unusual addition of the sweet and salted popcorn was actually a perfect combination with the sweetness of the cheesecake and the subtle saltiness of the salted caramel flavour. I couldn’t eat that fast enough! My friend was left with little choice but to have the Eton Mess while I devoured the cheesecake.

The service was friendly, witty and quick; attending frequently to our needs. It was a pleasant environment on the Thursday lunch time we visited, with just enough people to create a chatter, but not too many that it was busy. A lovely way to spend a winter’s lunch.
