Clifton Wine Bar Sunday Roast review

My pork could have fed two! It was tender and juicy, and came with two shards of outstanding crackling. Simon?s chicken was also really tasty and came with stuffing which reminded us both of home-cooked roasts growing up.

The Clifton Wine Bar is tucked away underneath Georgian houses on one of the main roads into Clifton. It is in a perfect location for a visit as part of a wander around Clifton, and it is just by the beautiful Birdcage Walk. It is cosy and snug, and has a variety of seating options, from comfy sofas to tall tables. It is decorated in jewel tones and makes a virtue of its lack of natural light by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere with lots of nooks and crannies.

Calamari at Clifton Wine Bar in Bristol It was great to see a wide range of dishes available on a Sunday; apparently, not everyone likes a roast on a Sunday. Who’d have thought it?! Anyway, they would be well catered for at The Clifton Wine Bar which on the day we visited had sausages and mash, two pies and a risotto in addition to four roasts.

One of my favourite tapas dishes is calamari, and The Clifton Wine Bar have put their own spin on it by adding Cajun spices. This was absolutely delicious, served with a citrus aioli and a generous chunk of lemon. The Cajun spice was very subtle, and added a little warmth. The portion was a good size for sharing, and whet our appetites perfectly.

We then moved onto our roasts. Simon went for the chicken and I had pork, and we ordered some cauliflower cheese on the side. Both roasts were huge, not to mention looking fantastic! The roasties were excellent; really crispy and golden. The carrots were, I think, roasted in honey or maple syrup and were absolutely delicious, as was the kale and red cabbage. The chef very generously sent us a couple of Yorkies and they were great; tall and crunchy and absolutely wonderful at soaking up the fantastic gravy! I could write a sonnet about the gravy, but I’ll stick to just saying that it was one of my favourite parts of the meal.

On to the meat; my pork could have fed two! It was tender and juicy, and came with two shards of outstanding crackling. Simon’s chicken was also really tasty and came with stuffing which reminded us both of home-cooked roasts growing up. The cauliflower cheese was great; a tasty sauce and a crispy duvet of cheese on top. I felt very sad to be defeated by the portion size; it was a really delicious roast, and as I sit writing this I’m wishing it were more socially acceptable to carry take away boxes to bring home leftovers.

I definitely enjoyed our roast and I very much recommend that you try out The Clifton Wine Bar.
