Backdown - Pushing Forward Album Review

When word of mouth gets going, which with this release I?m sure it will, there?s no doubt this will be big. ?Into The Fray? has a cracker of a beatdown near the end of the track, so get the riot gear ready in advance.

Backdown are made up of ex members of Failure to Follow, Dogfight and Honour Your Pain, so a decent calibre of hardcore as far as Bristol goes.

Their previous release (Against All Odds) was catchy but this one certainly blows it out of the water. It has a bit more anger and a bit more swagger about it – it actually reminds me of Bristol’s own True Valiance (RIP) in parts, but also has a strong LBU vibe to it (I can imagine the guys at the legendary Rucktion Records vibing along to this one for sure). It’s aggressive stuff but it also has some decent melody and great vocal hooks so I expect they’ll cause quite a stir once this release has had some time to float around the scene. It’s technically proficient, layered, and there’s plenty going on for this to have UKHC kids two stepping to the merch stalls to grab some stash and represent BCHC.

This is a must-listen for fans of Knuckledust, Trapped Under Ice and True Valiance. Special mention for the artwork – it looks great. It would have been easy to have a knuckleduster covered in blood on the front cover like a lot of HC releases these days, but it’s another layer to a great EP. Solid work.

4/5
