As well as the food, I really loved the calm, welcoming atmosphere at A cappella. The staff are really friendly, attentive and efficient. A cappella would be great for couples and groups/families alike.

A cappella opened in 2007 and ever since has been quietly getting on with the business of making delicious pizza in a cosy and welcoming space. With a range of local and national awards under their belt, their tried and tested recipes have seen them more than hold their own against the tide of new pizza place openings in Bristol.

My husband and I visited on a windswept and rainy Thursday, but the rain certainly hadn’t put off diners from visiting A cappella, and only a couple of tables remained free while we were there. A cappella also offer take-away, so if you don’t fancy leaving the sofa, you can also enjoy their pizzas at home.

A Capella - Bristol Food Review - Olives

To start with, Simon and I shared a generous portion of tasty and succulent marinated olives (£3). Then we both went for a 12” pizza. I chose a Margherita (£7.45) with added mushrooms (£1)and parma ham (£1.50). When adding parma ham to a pizza, you can choose between having it cooked or uncooked, which I think is a great touch. I went for cooked. Simon chose the Cadenza (£10.45) which is tomato sauce, mozzarella, silver skin anchovies, black olives, capers, chillies and garlic.

Both pizzas have wonderful pillowy-soft bases. I made a rookie error in missing the opportunity of ordering one of the home-made dips to dunk my crusts into.

My ham and mushroom pizza was very tasty version of the classic. Cooked parma ham is a great twist; because the ham is so thin, when cooked it’s really crisp and it intensifies the flavour. This worked really well with the softness of the base and mushrooms.

Simon said his pizza was excellent too, with the intense flavours really complimenting each other.

After a little rest, we found room for some pudding. I went for the Ginger, Orange and Cinnamon cake (£2.20) with cream (50p) and Simon had the cheesecake (£3.50).  I took the advice on the menu and had my cake warm with cream. It was wonderfully light and delicious, and I loved the richness of the cream with it. Simon’s cheesecake was also really light and fresh, with a lovely smooth texture.
