Martha Wainwright at The Colston Hall in Bristol on Saturday 15 July 2017

Martha Wainwright Plus very special guest Angaleena Presley at The Colston Hall in Bristol on Saturday 15 July 2017.

With an undeniable voice and an arsenal of powerful songs, Martha Wainwright is “one of the most compelling performers you could hope to see” (The Telegraph). Hailing from “the ridiculously talented Wainwright/McGarrigle clan” (The Scotsman), the acclaimed singer-songwriter shares “her mother’s gracefully lilting voice and borrows her older brother Rufus’s witty frankness” (Pitchfork).

Her new album, Goodnight City, features songs by iconic songwriters such as Beth Orton, Glen Hansard and her brother Rufus, and is the perfect vehicle for her “unequivocally powerful” (The Independent) voice. Wainwright will be joined on the Colston Hall stage by a very special guest, the Kentucky songstress Angaleena Presley, whose latest work ‘Wrangled’, in her own words, poignantly paints “a musical picture of loss, surrender, resurrection, redemption, and connection with real people who make and support honest music.”

Martha Wainwright

Martha Wainwright is a Canadian-American singer-songwriter, best known for her confessional writing style and distinctive voice. Following her eponymous debut album in 2005, she has released five albums of fiery folk-rock songs , including ‘I Know You’re Married but I’ve Got Feelings Too’ (2008) and and ‘Goodnight City’ (2016). The daughter of musicians Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, Martha Wainwright began her career as a backing singer for her brother Rufus, but quickly established a firm reputation as an artist in her own right. She released a tribute album to Edith Piaf, and has contributed to celebrations of Syd Barrett, Leonard Cohan and Duke Ellington.

Angaleena Presley

Angaleena Presley is an American country music singer-songwriter, renowned both as a solo artist and as a member of fiery trio Pistol Annies.

Her critically acclaimed debut album ‘American Middle Class’ (2014) deals with the struggles and triumphs of existence with her customarily ruthless honesty, delivered with style and panache, and was received enthusiastically; the title song was nominated for International Song of the Year at the UK Americana Awards.

Her second record ‘Wrangled’ (2017) sees a continuation in the same sharply focused social commentary, but directs her ‘take no prisoners’ approach towards the representation of women, the country music industry and the unseen underclass just trying to get by. Featuring co-writes with the likes of Chris Stapleton, Wanda Jackson and Guy Clark, it’s a record shot through with dark, wry humour and an irresistible groove, taking country music to a whole new level.

She has toured her own music internationally, and also toured extensively with Pistol Annies,  featuring Ashley Monroe and Miranda Lambert)
