Born in 1947, the pianist composer, Keith Tippett is a key figure in European art music as one of the most important jazz musicians, improvisers and composers of the last forty years.  A true Bristolian, born in Southmead and pupil at Fonthill Road and Greenway schools. As a chorister he sang in St.Thomas the Martyr Beckett choir, played in the school and the Bristol Youth Brass Band. In his early teens he formed a Trad Band with fellow pupils at Greenway School. From the age of five he studied western classical music with the late great Graham Harris and in his mid teens he played with the Danny Sheppard/Ted Bayliss Quintet, Henry’s Bootblacks, and many other Bristol Musicians (including Nick Cooper) often at the Dug Out club where he and his trio had a residency.

In 1966 he left Bristol for London and over the next decade established himself as one of the most innovative musicians of his time. Tippett has played, had his compositions played, held Master classes and workshops throughout Europe, Russia, Georgia, Latvia, Japan, India, S.Africa, Canada, and the U.S.A.

Tippett has been involved in 3 distinct areas of music for four decades working with contemporary, avant-garde and improvising musicians.  Over these years Tippett has built up a body of work that has included performance, composition, recordings, broadcasts, master-classes, film scores, workshops and children’s education projects.
