Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at Colston Hall in Bristol
Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra will perform at Colston Hall in Bristol from 9-10 December 2017.
Beloved piano maestro and tastemaker Jools Holland returns to Colston Hall with his renowned Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. He’ll be joined by a clutch of sparkling guests, including Grammy Award winner José Feliciano, revered for his musicianship in Latin America and around the world. Fan favourites Ruby Turner, Louise Marshall and Beth Rowley will all appear on vocals, along with the supreme Rhythm & Blues Orchestra with original Squeeze member Gilson Lavis on drums.
Jools will be performing tracks spanning his entire solo career along with pieces taken from his recent instrumental album ‘Piano’, released in December 2016, as well as songs from his new collaboration with José Feliciano.
Jools Holland OBE DL is a legendary composer and pianist, who began playing in pubs in London’s East End docks. His first ever recording was for punk band Wayne County and the Electric Chairs. He was the founding member of pop band Squeeze, before leaving to pursue his solo career. They reformed in 1985, and Holland played with them for another 5 years.
After co-hosting Sunday Night on NBC, he landed his own show Later… with Jools Holland, as well as his annual New Year’s Eve show Hootenanny.
In the summer of 2013 Holland had a Gromit called Bumble Boogie as a part of the Gromit Unleashed campaign. It played music he’d written that was inspired by Flight of the Bumble Bee, and was placed here inside Colston Hall.
José Feliciano
Having worked with the likes of John Lennon and Joni Mitchell in the past, José Feliciano’s catalogue of international hits include his covers of The Doors’ “Light My Fire” and the Bee Gees’ “And the Sun Will Shine,” along with the much-loved Christmas classic, “Feliz Navidad”. He is recording an album with Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, to be released later this year.
Ruby Turner
Ruby Turner is an R&B and soul singer, songwriter and actress. She has sung backing vocals for artists such as Bryan Ferry, UB40, Steel Pulse, Steve Winwood, Jools Holland and Mick Jagger and has written songs that have been covered by many artists including Lulu, Yazz and Maxi Priest.
She has released music on both sides of the Atlantic and in 1990 reached number one on the US R&B chart with It’s Gonna Be Alright. In recent years she has toured with former Squeeze member Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. She is a regular on BBC Television’s Jools Holland’s Hootenanny. She has also appeared as an actress on stage, film and television.
Beth Rowley
Hailing from Bristol, Beth Rowley is known for her rich soulful voice and love of Blues and Gospel. Following the success of her UK top 10 album ‘Little Dreamer’ in 2008, for which she was nominated a Brit Award, she’s now back after working on new material – a trio of EPs, the first ‘Wretched Body’ hit in 2013, with the second and third due to hit this year.
“I lived back in Bristol for 2 years, then London for past 2 years. I decided to get off the treadmill and to write and record new material on my own terms, regardless of however long it took. I’ve had the privilege of writing with some amazing writers, and musicians as well as developing my own sound and defining what I want it to be. I’m here again now and I’m very happy with the music I’ve been making.”
The period since ‘Little Dreamer’ has seen Beth’s film debut with the release of Oscar nominated Brit flick ‘An Education’, starring Carey Mulligan and directed by Danish director Lone Scherfig. Beth’s cameo role as the nightclub singer received rave reviews as did her theme song ‘You Got Me Wrapped Around Your Little Finger’ written with collaborator Ben Castle.
Beth has appeared on stage with some giants of the music world including Burt Bacharach at the Electric Proms, David Arnold (James Bond), and as Angelo Badalamenti’s personal guest (David Lynch’s right hand man) at Ghent film Festival. Beth also performed at Willie Nelsons 4th July Back Yard Festival in Austin alongside Ray Wylie Hubbard. She also recently guested as main support for Laura Mvula’s UK tour at the end of 2013.
Louise Marshall
Born in Oldham, Lancashire, Louise was immersed in music from her youth, beginning piano lessons at five and music theory lessons at seven. Marshall also joined the Oldham Girl’s Choir at seven and continued as a member under the esteemed Eileen Bentley’s (MBE) tutelage until age sixteen. Louise conducted her Father’s choir, The Oldham International Choir from the early age of 13, and played the Church organ in Lancashire before winning attendance to the competitive Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester in 1989, where she studied piano with Alicja Fiderkiewicz and conducted the Chamber Choir.
Louise then began her accomplished session singing career prior to joining The National Youth Choir of Great Britain in 1990, where she wrote several Gospel arrangements, many of which remain in circulation worldwide.
In 1992, Louise won a scholarship to The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and studied Piano with Joan Havill whilst learning her trade singing with function bands and session work.
Louise has worked with Jools Holland, Beverley Knight, Michael Ball, Marti Pellow, Chris Difford, Robbie Williams, Bryan Ferry, Ronnie Wood, Van Morrison, Eric Stewart, Madeline Bell, Sheila Ferguson, Sam Brown, Russell Watson, Steve Winwood, Paul Young, Don Blackman, Solomon Burke, Karl Jenkins and John Rutter, to name but a few.
