Behind the Scenes Studio Visits Jo Lathwood at Spike Island in Bristol on Saturday 4 March 2017
Jo Lathwood has developed a highly experimental sculpture and installation based practice. Driven by a curiosity of how things are fabricated, Lathwood uses a wide variety of materials to educate and reveal forgotten, or sometimes re-appropriated, techniques. Her alchemical practice varies from experiments with making her own bronze to developing a methodology to cast with tree resin.
She is currently researching the possibilities of shaping and casting molten rock in a project called ‘Is it Magma?” with support form geologists, volcanologists, artists, founders and materials scientists.
Play is essential to Lathwood’s work and development. It is often through experimentation that new ways of working can be found and developed. Regular themes in her work include natural phenomenon, structures and movement.

Jo Lathwood
Jo Lathwood (b.1984) is a sculptor and installation artist and based in Bristol, UK. Educated at the University of Brighton, Lathwood acquired a First Class Degree in Fine Art Sculpture. She has shown work in galleries around the UK and internationally and has also taken part in various residency programmes and biennials in the USA, Canada, France, Belgium and Austria. In 2012 she became the co-director of ‘Ore and Ingot’ an artist-led fine art bronze foundry in Bristol. Process and materials are a regular inspiration to her practice and the materials she uses range from tree resin to bronze.
